You can't help but be calmed by the gentle reassurance in her voice as Civita Conte gently, but confidently, says, "Trust me." -- and with good reason. As a little girl in Rome, Italy, Civita dreamed of becoming a fashion designer. By the time she was thirteen years old, she could be found hurrying to the tailor shop every day after school. While cleaning the shop she quickly learned to identify fabrics by sight, and soon began to acquire the skills of a master tailor. After practicing her craft in Italy for twenty years, Civita moved to the United States and began looking for work. Even though she couldn't speak a word of English, Halle Bros. in Cleveland recognized her exceptional talent and offered her a position. For one hour each day they would spend time helping her learn the language, and within two months she was able to begin communicating directly with their customers. Shortly afterward, a wealthy woman from Lakewood came to the store with material containing threads of pure gold to see if it could be made into a formal gown for the holidays. The supervisor explained that, unfortunately, they didn't have anyone capable of handling the project. After the customer left, the supervisor told Civita about the project, and Civita replied, "I can do it!" The customer came back to the store and Civita proceeded to take her measurements and make the gown. When the gown was completed, the customer was extremely happy and the store manager told Civita she would now be the talk of the town and promoted her to head of alterations. Civita continued to work at Halle Bros. for ten years, and when Halle Bros. closed their doors, Civita opened her own shop on Triskett Avenue. In the early 1980s, she then built a new home for her business in North Olmsted, Ohio. Civita's Tailoring specializes in catering to the complete tailoring needs of both men and women.
